Day 4 in Big Time Literacy's Blog Challenge.
Today's topic: what is my favorite subject to teach?
To be totally honest--it is whatever has been really prepared. If I am super ready for math, it is that lesson. Or if I have a fantastic reading comprehension lesson with connections, practice and an anchor chart that we create together, well, it has to be that. And, if perchance I have an ag lessons that crosses ELA and math and the kids were very engaged, you guessed it, that is my favorite.
But if we are talking about in general, most of the year, I'm gonna say: ELA. As a special ed teacher I taught a lot of lessons related to decoding, and I really loved that. This past year Mrs. Jones and I delved into teaching reading comprehension strategies (prior knowledge, making connections, visualization, etc.) and reading skills (main idea & details, character, setting, plot, cause & effect, etc.). We scoured TpT for great lessons/units and rocked many lessons in the 3rd and 4th quarters.
This next year our district has adopted Wonders for our ELA instruction. We are really excited to follow the sequence and use the knowledge we gained this last year to give our students wonderful instruction.

ReplyDeleteYou have such an interesting school to teach in! Reading is definitely my favorite too. I started out terrified to teach reading in my primary classroom. I had done the majority of my college work in upper elementary and my real comfort zone was math. I went to a Timothy Rasinski conference for struggling readers and got so much wonderful information that I became hooked. I learned, I researched, I tried new things. Now I have my master's degree in literacy! =) Thank you for sharing!

Hanging Out in First!
I think I am a lot like you when it comes to favorite subjects to teach. It really varies. I love seeing a student fall in love with a book I love, but I also love the look of accomplishment when they solve a math problem that they were struggling and then say, "Oh! That is easy!"
